New Delhi, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : A recent study conducted by the Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA) in Jamnagar has revealed promising outcomes in managing bedwetting, or nocturnal enuresis, in children through a combination of Ayurvedic medicine and yoga. The research, supported by the Ministry of Ayush, highlights that children practicing yoga alongside Ayurvedic remedies experienced a greater reduction in bedwetting incidents compared to those using the medication alone.
The study involved approximately 38 children aged 6 to 14 years, divided into two groups over an eight-week period. One group received a herbal formulation called ‘Madhya Rasayana Churna,’ composed of Brahmi, Shankhapushpi, Mulethi, and Giloy. The second group practiced four simple yoga postures—Utkatasana, Ardha Shalabhasana, Bhujangasana, and Shavasana—twice daily, in addition to taking the same Ayurvedic medicine.
Results showed that the group practicing yoga alongside the Ayurvedic treatment experienced nearly a 70% improvement in bedwetting frequency, compared to a 38% improvement in the group relying solely on medication. Additionally, children in the combined treatment group demonstrated approximately a 61% enhancement in memory, while the medication-only group saw a 31% improvement.
The study also noted a significant reduction in irritability, with a 66% decrease observed among those practicing yoga. Furthermore, hyperactivity levels dropped by around 71%, and improvements in concentration and morale were reported.
These findings were published in a research paper in the esteemed AYU Journal, authored by Prof. Vaidya Virendra Kori, Vaidya Sagar Bhinde, and Vaidya Amisha Bawra. The researchers analyzed the data collected during the study to draw their conclusions.
Prof. Dr. Tanuja Naseri, Director of ITRA, remarked that bedwetting in children can be linked to various factors, impacting their self-esteem and behavior. She emphasized the encouraging improvements in memory, concentration, and behavioral standards associated with the combined use of Ayurvedic medicine and yoga.
The study suggests that practicing yoga may enhance pelvic muscle coordination and overall physical and mental balance. Some components of the Ayurvedic formulation used in the study have traditionally been associated with mental peace and cognitive health.
This research underscores the potential of an integrated approach using Ayurveda and yoga in managing bedwetting issues in children. However, it is crucial for parents to consult qualified healthcare professionals before adopting any treatment or yoga practices for their children.
