Awareness and Cooperation Key to Eradicating Sickle Cell Disease, Says Governor Mangubhai Patel

Bhopal, May 20: Governor Mangubhai Patel emphasized that awareness and public participation are crucial for eradicating serious genetic disorders like sickle cell anemia. Timely screening and appropriate treatment can help manage the disease effectively. Without proper information, this illness can be passed from parents to children. However, with vigilance, cooperation, and caution, eradication is achievable. The Governor made these remarks during a sickle cell health camp and benefit distribution program in Bhimpur, Betul district, where Union Minister Durgadas Uike was also present.

Governor Patel noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged to make India free of sickle cell disease by 2047. Both the central and state governments are working diligently towards this goal. Over 70 million screenings have been conducted across the country. He praised the efforts in Betul district aimed at eradicating sickle cell disease, calling the event a significant step forward. He urged collective efforts under the motto “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and Sabke Prayas” for the eradication of sickle cell disease.

He advised that to prevent any child from being affected by sickle cell disease, health cards of prospective brides and grooms should be matched before marriage. He mentioned ongoing research and treatment efforts in allopathy, Ayurveda, and homeopathy for sickle cell eradication. The Governor also recommended that sickle cell and TB patients avoid oily and fast foods, consume nutritious diets, exercise regularly, and adopt a disciplined lifestyle.

In his address, the Governor highlighted the government’s initiatives for uplifting tribal communities under the Prime Minister’s Janman scheme, focusing on the development of special backward tribes like Baiga, Sahariya, and Bhariya. He described the ‘Dharti Aaba Tribal Village Utkarshta Yojana’ as unprecedented in terms of infrastructure development and basic amenities in tribal villages. He directed the preparation of a map for tribal areas to align government efforts with local needs. Education, he stated, is the most significant means of progress and success, and he urged parents to provide quality education to their children, especially daughters.

Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Durgadas Uike remarked that the inauguration of the sickle cell testing machine in Bhimpur marks a historic step towards providing better health facilities for tribal and marginalized communities. He commended the ongoing awareness and eradication efforts in Madhya Pradesh under Governor Patel’s leadership.

During the event, Governor Patel launched the advanced ‘Gazel’ machine for testing sickle cell anemia and thalassemia. This machine will be installed at the community health center in Bhimpur, facilitating rapid and accurate diagnosis of genetic blood disorders.

He also inaugurated the ‘Mission Rani’ campaign, which will be a collaborative effort among the health, women and child development, and tribal affairs departments. This initiative aims to control anemia among women, adolescent girls, and pregnant mothers. The campaign’s goals include reducing anemia, improving hemoglobin levels, and ensuring early detection of sickle cell and thalassemia diseases. Under this campaign, tests for hemoglobin, complete blood counts, serum ferritin, vitamin B-12, and special blood tests will be conducted.

Governor Patel distributed benefits to various scheme beneficiaries during the program, including sickle cell certificates, genetic cards, food baskets, and financial assistance. He honored Sejal Uike for scoring 94% in CBSE Class 12, national kabaddi player Shivani Uike, and Kalpana Kodpe for her outstanding performance in international karate. The Governor also inspected stalls from the departments of women and child development, animal husbandry, the National Livelihood Mission, forests, and health, gathering information about departmental activities and schemes. The event was attended by local representatives, senior officials, and a large number of villagers.
