Varanasi, July 29: Uttar Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya emphasized the urgent need for peace, compassion, and non-violence as taught by Lord Buddha. He stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India is not only showcasing its ancient cultural heritage globally but is also elevating the timeless legacy of Buddha worldwide.
Speaking at an event held at the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies in Varanasi on the occasion of Ashadha Purnima, Maurya described the inclusion of Sarnath in UNESCO’s World Heritage List as a symbol of global recognition for India’s cultural heritage. He noted that Sarnath, the site of Buddha’s first sermon, is not merely a religious location but a center for peace, coexistence, and compassion for all humanity.
Maurya highlighted that Ashadha Purnima is an opportunity to embrace the values of human welfare and global brotherhood. He remarked that under Modi’s guidance, India is establishing a new identity on the world stage by connecting its cultural and spiritual heritage with modern development. During his travels abroad, he witnessed the deep faith people have in Buddha and their respect for India.
Referencing his visit to Russia, he mentioned that the reverence for Buddha there is a testament to India’s ancient cultural strength. He recalled that Emperor Ashoka played a pivotal role in spreading Buddha’s teachings globally, and today, the central and state governments are continuing that legacy. Efforts are underway to enhance road, rail, and air connectivity to major Buddhist pilgrimage sites, which will boost Buddhist tourism and local economies.
Maurya asserted that Sarnath’s inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage List is not just an achievement for Uttar Pradesh or India but a recognition of shared cultural heritage for all humanity. He stressed that in a world facing violence and conflict, Buddha’s timeless teachings can guide us toward lasting peace and harmony.
In his address, he also acknowledged the 650th birth anniversary of Saint Shiramoni Guru Ravidas, wishing well for the people of the state and the nation. He noted that Guru Ravidas’s messages of social harmony, equality, and human service continue to inspire society today.
Furthermore, he affirmed that the Uttar Pradesh government is committed to preserving cultural heritage, developing religious tourism, and ensuring the comprehensive growth of all major spiritual sites, including Kashi, Sarnath, Ayodhya, and Mathura.
