New Delhi, June 12: Tea is an integral part of daily life in India. From starting the morning to easing evening fatigue, a cup of tea provides comfort. However, many people often consume foods that can adversely affect their body and digestive system alongside tea.

According to medical science, the caffeine, tannins, and other active compounds in tea can impact digestion when combined with certain foods. This is why some combinations can lead to gas, acidity, reduced nutrient absorption, and tooth sensitivity.

Tea primarily contains caffeine, tannins, polyphenols, and small amounts of fluoride. While caffeine provides an immediate energy boost, tannins can sometimes hinder the absorption of iron and certain minerals. This is why pairing tea with specific foods is not considered beneficial for the body.

Firstly, let’s discuss spicy and pungent foods. Ingredients like garlic, onion, green chili, spicy chutney, and heavy spices contain compounds such as allicin, capsaicin, and sulfur that can accelerate digestion and increase stomach acid production. When consumed with tea, which already affects gastric acid due to caffeine, this combination can lead to irritation, acidity, and heaviness in the stomach.

The combination of lemon and tea is also not suitable for everyone. Lemon is rich in citric acid and vitamin C, while tea contains tannins. When taken together or immediately after, some individuals may experience an imbalance in stomach pH levels, leading to acidity, bloating, or mild gas. Experts recommend maintaining at least a 20-30 minute gap between consuming tea and lemon.

Combining chocolate with tea is also not considered balanced for digestion or flavor. Chocolate contains theobromine, caffeine, fat, and sugar, which can increase caloric intake when paired with tea and may slow digestion for some people. Particularly, consuming chocolate with milk tea can lead to a feeling of heaviness in the stomach. However, dark chocolate with black tea is sometimes seen as a better match, albeit in limited quantities.

Drinking tea immediately after consuming turmeric-rich foods is also not advisable. Curcumin, found in turmeric, is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent that helps reduce inflammation in the body. However, the tannins and caffeine in tea can affect its absorption, leading to feelings of heaviness, gas, or mild discomfort in some individuals. Therefore, it’s better to maintain a gap between turmeric and tea consumption.

Additionally, drinking cold water or consuming very cold items immediately after hot tea can be harmful to both teeth and digestion. Sudden temperature changes can cause micro-cracks in tooth enamel, increasing sensitivity. Moreover, abrupt temperature shifts can also affect the digestive system, leading to gas or stomach cramps.
