Australia to Tour South Africa for Test Series After Sandpaper Scandal, Says Captain Pat Cummins It Will Be Challenging

New Delhi, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : Australia is set to embark on a significant tour of South Africa, featuring three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Test matches starting September 24. This marks the first Test series in South Africa since the infamous sandpaper scandal in 2018. Australian captain Pat Cummins anticipates that the lingering effects of the controversy may present some difficulties during the tour.

In a recent episode of the “Keeping It Cricket” podcast, Cummins mentioned, “There might be some hostility during the Test series. However, it won’t be as loud as the Ashes series. The Hollies Stand at Edgbaston can get quite raucous.”

Reflecting on his experiences playing in South Africa, Cummins noted, “In the crowds, there are always certain sections that can be rowdy, but we have faced this before. Most importantly, as captain, I will be in the thick of it, not near the spectators.”

Cummins expressed confidence that the issue has since cooled down. “Our focus will remain on the cricket,” he added.

He emphasized the importance of the series for both teams, stating, “Everyone moves on. The good thing about a three-Test series is that you get immersed in the game, and soon everyone starts to worry about the cricket. I’m sure there will be some angry fans, and some articles or media commentary will surface. But our group has moved past it.”

The 2018 ball-tampering incident had a profound impact on Australian cricket, resulting in suspensions for key players like Steve Smith and David Warner for a year, while Cameron Bancroft received a nine-month ban.

This upcoming series is crucial for both Australia and South Africa in terms of qualifying for the World Test Championship final. Cricket fans around the globe are eagerly anticipating what promises to be an exciting series.
