New Delhi, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : Seven former Australian cricket captains have reached out to Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong regarding the troubling situation of Imran Khan, the former captain of the Pakistan cricket team and current Prime Minister, who has been imprisoned for an extended period.
The captains, including Allan Border, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Kim Hughes, Mark Taylor, and Steve Waugh, expressed their concerns in a letter. They clarified that they are not acting as political figures but as former players compelled to speak out on a matter of humanity.
In their correspondence, they emphasized that their focus is not on any legal or political issues surrounding Khan but rather on the treatment of individuals in custody. “This is a matter of basic humanity, regardless of their political stance,” the letter stated.
Previously, on August 23, a group of 22 former international cricket captains also wrote to Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, advocating for better medical care for Khan. They pointed out that the facilities available to him in prison do not meet the standards set by the Supreme Court. Their letter included three main requests: allowing the Supreme Court-appointed medical board, which includes Khan’s personal doctor, to conduct a thorough and independent health assessment—especially concerning reports of vision loss in his right eye; ensuring uninterrupted weekly family visits as ordered by the court; and guaranteeing timely medical treatment based on the results of any examinations.
Concerns about Khan’s health have also been voiced by former Pakistani cricketers, including Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, and Moin Khan. Australian captain Pat Cummins has joined the campaign advocating for Khan’s well-being.
