Sangrur, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : Geeta Rani is a well-known name in Indian athletics. The accomplished weightlifter has earned medals on international stages, bringing pride to her country. Born on September 16, 1981, in Sangrur, Punjab, Geeta developed a passion for weightlifting at a young age. This led her to pursue greatness in the sport, starting her coaching at just 13 years old under Surinder Singh.
Geeta first showcased her talent on an international level in 2003 at the Afro-Asian Games, where she won a bronze medal in Hyderabad. Her success continued in 2004 when she secured three silver medals at the Asian Championships. The pinnacle of her career came in 2006 at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, where she triumphed in the 75+ weight category, earning a gold medal. This victory catapulted her into the spotlight, making her a celebrated figure both nationally and internationally. However, at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, she narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing in fourth place.
Despite her achievements, Geeta’s career has been marred by controversy. In 2015, she tested positive for a banned substance during the National Games, resulting in a two-year ban. Although she was cleared in 2017, she has not participated in any national or international competitions since then. Geeta has yet to officially retire from the sport.
For her remarkable contributions to weightlifting, the Government of India honored Geeta Rani with the Arjuna Award in 2006.
