Australia Faces Follow-On Challenge Against South Africa in Second Test
Australia struggles in the second Test against South Africa, facing a follow-on after a dismal first innings performance.

Gqeberha, October 22 (Daily Kiran) : Australia’s batting lineup has come under heavy scrutiny following a dismal performance in the second Test against South Africa in Gqeberha. After being bowled out for just 99 runs in their first innings, the team has already lost four wickets for 156 runs in their follow-on innings, putting them at risk of defeat as the match enters its final day.
Head coach Andrew McDonald acknowledged the team’s shortcomings during a press conference after the fourth day’s play. Reflecting on the first innings collapse, he stated, “We couldn’t form any partnerships. We are not a perfect batting unit. There are some flaws. We didn’t expect to be in a follow-on situation. We thought the surface was good for batting. Credit to South Africa; they gained momentum quickly and exposed our weaknesses. However, I still believe we are better than them, but I cannot defend my team in the current situation.”
McDonald emphasized that just a week prior, the team was performing exceptionally well. “Here we are, starting to defend a team that has performed admirably for a long time. In case of poor performance, I won’t leave anyone behind. I have full confidence that our players can turn the match around on the final day. If not, we will head to Cape Town, recharge, and lead again,” he added.
As Australia prepares to bat on Thursday, their primary goal will be to save the match. With 156 runs on the board and still trailing South Africa by 170 runs, the team finds some solace in Travis Head’s presence at the crease, as he has scored 87 runs. Steve Smith and Alex Carey are yet to come in, while Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc also have batting capabilities.
South Africa declared their first innings at 425 runs, forcing Australia into a follow-on after their disappointing score of 99.
