New Delhi, October 11 (Daily Kiran) : Iran has intensified its criticism of a recent defense agreement between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey. The Iranian government warns that any external intervention in Yemen could lead to serious and unwanted consequences for the entire region.
The tripartite defense pact was formally enacted on October 5, following an uptick in missile and drone attacks on Saudi targets by Houthi rebels. Both Turkey and Pakistan have stated that they have begun necessary actions to support Saudi Arabia.
When asked about reports suggesting that thousands of Pakistani soldiers could be deployed to Saudi Arabia, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei expressed hope that these reports were unfounded. He emphasized that all regional countries are aware that any intervention in Yemen could yield undesirable outcomes.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, without directly naming the agreement, urged neighboring countries to adopt policies of self-reliance and genuine brotherhood. He asserted that such agreements would not constrain Iran.
Several Iranian lawmakers have dismissed the pact as largely symbolic. Ahmed Bakhshayesh, a member of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, described it as a “paper and political agreement.” Another committee member, Ibrahim Rezaei, questioned whether the agreement would genuinely provide security to Saudi Arabia. He remarked on social media that Saudi Arabia should recognize that a paper agreement with Turkey and Pakistan would not ensure its safety, much like its previous reliance on the United States.
Reports indicate that Iran’s criticism has particularly focused on Pakistan, especially as Islamabad has recently played a mediating role between Tehran and Washington. Iranian MP Ahmad Naderi stated on social media that Pakistan’s involvement in the conflict against the Yemeni people alongside Saudi Arabia indicates that it should no longer be viewed merely as a mediator, but as an intervening force in the region.
Iranian state media has also criticized the activation of this defense agreement, prominently featuring warnings from Houthi officials against Turkey and Pakistan. The Tasnim news agency labeled the development as Turkey and Pakistan’s entry into the Saudi war against the Yemeni people.
