Assams Chief Minister Extends Restaurant Hours for Football Fans During World Cup

Guwahati, July 15: Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that restaurants in Guwahati will remain open until 3:30 AM for the next four days. This decision aims to allow football fans to enjoy the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals and finals without any hassle.

The Chief Minister shared the news on his social media platform, X, stating that the Guwahati district administration has been granted permission to extend restaurant closing hours on July 15, 16, 19, and 20. Sarma emphasized, “Football brings people together, and we want our sports enthusiasts to enjoy the FIFA World Cup semi-finals and finals without any inconvenience.”

He also mentioned that similar relaxations could be implemented in other districts of Assam based on local demand. “I have authorized district administrations in other areas to extend hours wherever requests come from restaurant owners’ associations and local communities,” he added.

This initiative is expected to benefit football fans gathering at restaurants, cafes, and other venues to watch late-night international matches on large screens. As the World Cup reaches its final stages, a significant influx of people is anticipated in Assam, particularly in Guwahati, a major football hub, at hotels, restaurants, cafes, and sports bars.

The temporary extension of restaurant hours aims to facilitate match viewing and ensure fans can enjoy the games at designated locations. The Chief Minister also urged people to celebrate responsibly, stating, “Enjoy this magnificent sport responsibly.”

In recent years, the state government has taken several steps to promote sports and enhance sports-related facilities in Assam. This latest decision reflects the government’s effort to cater to public enthusiasm for major global sporting events while providing local businesses with an opportunity to meet increased demand during late-night matches.
