Mbappé Reflects on Frances Exit from FIFA World Cup 2026

Arlington, July 15: In a disappointing turn of events, France faced a 0-2 defeat against Spain in the first semifinal of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Following the loss, French captain Kylian Mbappé acknowledged that the team failed to execute their game plan effectively. He noted that France made several technical and strategic errors, which Spain capitalized on.

Mbappé encouraged his teammates, stating, “When you win, you hold your head high, but when you lose, you must still keep your head up.” He emphasized the need for the team to learn from this defeat and move forward. Throughout the match, Spain maintained pressure on France from the outset. The Spanish players displayed excellent teamwork, successfully neutralizing France’s strong attack and controlling the pace of the game. France’s star forward struggled to make an impact during this crucial match.

After the game, Mbappé remarked, “We did not play the way we wanted to. Whether it was strategy, technique, or overall team performance, we did not reach our level. In a World Cup semifinal, if you do not implement your plan correctly, winning becomes very difficult.”

He praised Spain for their commitment to their game plan and their ability to control the match, a feat France could not replicate. “Spain performed better in controlling the game. We allowed them to dictate the pace. When a team like Spain gains control of the ball, it becomes very challenging to make a comeback,” he added.

The captain admitted that the team should have adopted a more aggressive approach from the start. He suggested that pressing and better coordination in midfield could have troubled Spain. “We needed to be ready for a direct confrontation. Spain is a team that prefers not to run too much. When we regained possession, our initial passes and touches were not at the level expected in a World Cup semifinal,” he explained.

With this defeat, France’s impressive knockout record in the World Cup has come to an end. This marks the first time since losing to Germany in the quarterfinals of the 2014 World Cup that France has been eliminated in the knockout stage. Previously, they had won 10 out of 11 knockout matches, with one ending in a draw.

This defeat marks France’s fourth loss in a World Cup semifinal, following defeats in 1958, 1982, and 1986. Additionally, this is the third consecutive semifinal loss to Spain in major tournaments, having previously lost in Euro 2024 and the 2025 Nations League.

Mbappé expressed his disappointment, stating that reaching the final was a dream to bring joy to the nation. “This is very disappointing. Our goal was to reach the final and give our country a chance to dream. Right now, we are at a loss for words, but we must gather ourselves. After a break, we need to move forward, as many challenges remain at both club and international levels.” France will now compete in a playoff match for third place against the losing team from the semifinal between Argentina and England.
