New Delhi, March 10: The upcoming assembly elections have brought significant developments for the Congress party in Assam. Former national finance secretary of the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP), Jayant Khand, has officially joined the Congress party along with several other leaders.
Khand was welcomed into the party at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi. The event saw the presence of prominent leaders, including Jitendra Singh, in charge of Assam and AICC General Secretary, Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi, and National Secretary Manoj Chauhan.
Welcoming Khand, Gaurav Gogoi remarked that the inclusion of a grassroots leader like him reflects the growing public discontent against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership in Assam. He noted that many leaders within the ruling camp feel stifled by the current leadership, which allegedly sidelines active and honest workers while promoting corrupt elements.
Gogoi emphasized that Khand’s decision to join Congress signifies a shift in Assam’s political landscape.
Attacking the BJP, Jitendra Singh stated that the party’s strategy aims to undermine regional identities and gradually eliminate regional parties. He cited examples from Odisha and Bihar, where the BJP initially forms alliances and then attempts to politically erase its partners.
Singh asserted that a similar effort is underway to weaken the AGP in Assam, and Khand’s entry into Congress will strengthen the fight to preserve Assam’s culture and values.
