Guwahati, June 30: Assam Police conducted a significant operation on Tuesday, seizing approximately 37 kilograms of gold valued at around ₹55 crores in Guwahati. One individual has been arrested in connection with this case.
The suspect has been identified as Akshay Bhansore, a resident of Sangli district in Maharashtra. A case has been registered at the Latasil police station, and further investigations are underway.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Sambhavi Mishra stated that the seizure was made during a police operation based on specific intelligence. The confiscated gold has been taken into custody for examination.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Bhansore had arrived from Maharashtra and had been residing in the Gandhi Basti area of Guwahati for the past two years. Police suspect he was operating as a courier, tasked with transporting gold shipments from one location to another.
Authorities are now working to identify the owner of the seized gold and to determine its intended destination. Investigators are examining the suspect’s financial records and communication logs to identify other individuals who may be connected to this operation.
The investigation is also focused on the source of the gold, its intended recipient, and whether this seizure is part of a larger inter-state gold smuggling network. Police have not ruled out the possibility of additional arrests as the investigation progresses.
This seizure marks one of the largest recoveries of gold by Assam Police in recent times and comes amid intensified action against organized smuggling and illegal trade networks in the Northeast. Senior police officials have indicated that intelligence-based operations against organized crime, including gold and drug trafficking, have been ramped up across the state.
Officials are coordinating with other investigative agencies to confirm the source of the seized shipment and to uncover the larger network behind it. More information is expected to emerge as the investigation continues.
