Guwahati, May 8: Assam Police, in collaboration with the Assam Rifles, conducted a successful operation in Silchar, Assam, leading to the arrest of a couple along with the recovery of weapons and explosives. Authorities reported this development on Thursday.
Based on intelligence and technical surveillance, the operation took place in Block 6 of Tarapur, near Ramnagar, within the jurisdiction of Silchar Police Station. The arrested individuals have been identified as Laishram Tikhen Meitei and Monalisa Chanu, both residents of Churachandpur district in the neighboring state of Manipur.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajat Kumar stated that the suspects were tracked using mobile phone location data, resulting in their arrest during a late-night raid.
“We apprehended both individuals last night by tracking their mobile locations. This operation was a joint effort between Assam Police and the Assam Rifles,” the officer confirmed.
During the search of the rented accommodation, security personnel recovered an Italian-made 9mm pistol, five live cartridges, and a Chinese grenade.
Officials noted that the discovery of advanced weapons and explosives in a densely populated residential area has raised concerns among local residents, prompting security agencies to increase surveillance in the vicinity.
Local sources claim that the couple had been residing in the rented house for approximately one and a half months, concealing their identities in the area.
Investigators are now looking into whether the arrested couple has connections to any banned militant organizations or underground networks active in the Northeast.
Police suspect that the recovered weapons and explosives were intended for illegal activities, although the true motive behind their possession remains unclear.
Security agencies are also examining the couple’s activities, communication records, and potential contacts in Assam and Manipur.
Authorities have stated that both suspects are currently under interrogation, and further arrests or recoveries cannot be ruled out.
