Assam CM Criticizes Congress, Welcomes Former Leader to BJP

New Delhi, March 18: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma warmly welcomed former Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday. He stated that there is no place for “self-respecting individuals” in the old party.

Following Bordoloi’s formal induction into the BJP, Sarma spoke to reporters, calling this a significant political development. He noted that it reflects a broader trend of Congress leaders switching allegiances.

Sarma targeted the opposition party, stating, “I extend a heartfelt welcome to Pradyut Bordoloi into the BJP. Today, there is no place for self-respecting individuals in Congress.” He predicted that more senior Congress leaders would join the BJP in the coming months.

He claimed that leaders like Debabrata Saikia and Ripun Bora would also join the BJP within the next two years. “Many capable Congress leaders will come to us,” he added. Sarma emphasized that the trend of Congress leaders joining the BJP has been ongoing since 2016 and is likely to accelerate.

Clarifying Bordoloi’s intentions, the Chief Minister stressed that the former MP did not join the BJP for power or position. “They are not here to become leaders or ministers. If they wish to contest elections, we will support them in every possible way,” he stated.

Sarma described Bordoloi’s move as a sacrifice, highlighting that he left a respected position as an MP not to gain something, but to give up much.

Bordoloi’s shift is seen as a significant blow to Congress ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Assam. He expressed feeling “deeply hurt” and stated that he had no choice but to resign from Congress after enduring repeated humiliation within the party’s Assam unit.
