Assam CM Accuses Congress of Election Strategy Influenced by Bangladeshi Muslims

Guwahati, March 3: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has alleged that the Congress party has tailored its election strategy around assembly seats dominated by ‘Bangladeshi-origin Muslims’ ahead of the upcoming state elections.

Speaking to reporters, Sarma claimed that most of the seats Congress is contesting under its alliance are those with a significant presence of Bangladeshi-origin Muslims. He emphasized that this approach reflects the party’s political priorities, which diverge from the interests of Assam’s indigenous communities.

“The people of Assam should closely monitor the seats where Congress is contesting under its alliance. Most of these seats have a notable Muslim population of Bangladeshi origin. Congress is clearly not standing with the indigenous people of the state,” he stated.

Sarma further noted that as the assembly elections draw near, this pattern is becoming increasingly evident.

He also referenced the alleged political rivalry between Congress and the regional party Raijor Dal, led by activist-turned-politician Akhil Gogoi. He accused this competition of being confined to similar seats, reinforcing his claims about Congress’s electoral focus.

“From the beginning, I have said that Congress is not connected with Assam or its indigenous people. If the competition were in seats like Jorhat or Dibrugarh, the message would be different. Instead, Congress has pawned its political soul to Bangladeshi-origin Muslim voters and is running its politics from those areas,” Sarma asserted.

These remarks come amid escalating political rhetoric in the state as parties ramp up preparations for the assembly elections.
