Assam BJP MLA Calls for Reduction in VIP Convoys and Security Expenses

Guwahati, May 20: BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia from the Khumtai constituency in Assam has called for a significant reduction in the culture of VIP convoys and excessive security arrangements for ministers. He stated that such practices inconvenience the public and lead to unnecessary expenses.

Speaking to reporters about the need for budget cuts, Saikia emphasized that while governments may not control all market prices, they can certainly reduce non-essential government expenditures and set an example of financial discipline.

“The government may not be able to control every price increase, but unnecessary government spending can definitely be curtailed,” he remarked.

Saikia specifically criticized the practice of ministers traveling with long convoys of vehicles, pilot escorts, and heavy police deployments. “Ministers do not need to travel with so many cars, except for the Chief Minister. I often drive alone and see a large convoy speeding past. Why is it necessary for 10 to 15 vehicles to travel together?” he questioned.

He also raised concerns about the deployment of pilot vehicles and scooter escorts, especially those used during the movement of ministers and VIPs. “In many cases, pilot scooters block the entire road, preventing other vehicles from passing. This causes unnecessary inconvenience for the public. Such arrangements are not always necessary. Excessive security not only places a financial burden on the administration but also exacerbates traffic issues and public dissatisfaction,” he added.

Saikia further noted that the careless movement of VIP convoys can lead to accidents. “When pilot vehicles speed through the streets, people are often startled and quickly move aside, increasing the risk of accidents and causing significant distress to the public,” he concluded.
