Assam Achieves Milestone with First Export of GI-Tagged Karbi Anglong Ginger

Guwahati, March 3: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a significant achievement for Assam in agricultural exports on Tuesday. The first shipment of GI-tagged Karbi Anglong ginger has been sent to London, marking a historic moment for the state’s agricultural sector.

In a post on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister described this accomplishment as a proud moment for Assam’s farmers and a sign of the state’s growing presence in international agricultural markets.

He emphasized that this export reflects the increasing global recognition of Assam’s high-quality, GI-tagged products and the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen agriculture-based livelihoods.

A shipment of 21.2 metric tons of premium fresh ginger, sourced directly from farmers in Karbi Anglong, was flagged off from the Agricultural Building in Guwahati. This is the first time GI-tagged Karbi Anglong ginger is being exported from Assam to the UK market.

Chief Minister Sarma stated that this achievement aligns with the government’s broader vision of increasing farmers’ incomes through value addition, quality improvement, and robust global market relations.

He noted that Assam is continuously expanding its agricultural sector on a global scale, providing both recognition and economic opportunities for its farmers.

Agriculture Minister Atul Bora mentioned that this export offers Assam’s producers a chance to step onto the global stage. He added that the state is developing an ecosystem where farmers gain value, visibility, and access to international markets, thereby strengthening the Assam brand worldwide.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority facilitated this export initiative in collaboration with Nexton Foods Private Limited.

Present at the flag-off ceremony were Arun Rajoria, Commissioner and Secretary of the Agriculture Department, Dr. P. Uday Praveen, Director of Agriculture, Vinita Sudhanshu, General Manager of APEDA, and other departmental representatives.
