New Delhi, May 1: Former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has responded to the vaping incident involving Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Riyan Parag, emphasizing that such situations could have been avoided. He highlighted that these issues cannot simply be brushed aside.
During the match between Punjab Kings and RR, Parag was caught vaping in the dressing room while his team was chasing a target. A video of Parag vaping went viral on social media, sparking discussions about player discipline and the legality of such devices under Indian law.
On his YouTube channel, Ashwin stated, “I believe this is a situation that could have been completely avoided. I want players to steer clear of such issues. I genuinely do not wish this for a young player, and it is somewhat sensitive.”
He added, “Sometimes, it is a personal choice, but your personal choices should remain in private spaces. If you engage in such activities in public areas, it can easily be avoided. I would just say this. As an older brother, this is my small piece of advice.”
Ashwin further remarked, “No one can say anything about this. Whatever you do, do it in your private space, especially since you are a franchise captain. You are likely an inspiration for many cricketers, young Indians, and youth worldwide. Therefore, there is also some responsibility.”
The former Indian spinner noted that such incidents cannot be suppressed. Without action, no one will learn from this. He expressed deep sympathy for the young player but firmly believes that these situations should be avoided and can be.
Following the vaping incident, Parag was fined 25% of his match fee and received a demerit point. On Thursday, an IPL statement confirmed that Parag admitted to breaching Level 1 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which includes “conduct that brings the game into disrepute.”
