Ashok Gehlot Urges Rajasthan Government to Revive Free Sanitary Napkin Distribution Program

Jaipur, May 28: Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has written to Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, urging the immediate and effective revival of the ‘Udaan Scheme’ for free sanitary napkin distribution in Rajasthan. This appeal coincides with ‘Menstrual Hygiene Day.’

In his letter, Gehlot expressed concern over the prolonged suspension of the scheme, highlighting its direct impact on the health and dignity of girls and women in the state. He noted that the unavailability of sanitary napkins forces many adolescent girls and women, particularly from rural and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, to resort to unsafe alternatives, increasing the risk of infections and serious health issues.

Gehlot reminded that the Congress government launched the ‘I Am Shakti Udaan Scheme’ in 2021, aimed at ensuring menstrual hygiene and dignity for women and girls. Under this initiative, millions of women and students in Rajasthan received free sanitary napkins each month.

He stated, “Menstrual hygiene is not just a welfare issue; it is a crucial matter linked to women’s health, dignity, and equality. No girl or woman should compromise her health due to a lack of basic hygiene products.”

Gehlot emphasized that the Udaan Scheme had become a vital support for millions of women and girls. It also played a significant role in raising awareness about menstruation and reducing the stigma associated with it in society.

He expressed regret that such an important initiative has been inactive for so long. Gehlot called on the state government to take the scheme seriously, ensure compliance with recent Supreme Court directives, and extend its benefits to all women.

Additionally, he urged the implementation of large-scale awareness campaigns on menstrual health in schools, colleges, and rural areas. Gehlot asserted that menstrual hygiene should be regarded as a public health priority, and the government must address this issue with sensitivity and urgency.
