Itanagar, May 11: Arunachal Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister, Chowna Mein, has congratulated NHPC, the state-owned company, for the successful operation of Unit 4 (250 MW) of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, the largest hydroelectric project in the country.
With the commissioning of the fourth unit, the total operational capacity of the project has now reached 1,000 MW. Mein stated that this marks a significant step in India’s efforts towards clean, sustainable, and self-reliant energy production.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to the engineers, technical teams, workers, officials, and all stakeholders involved in this historical project. He acknowledged their unwavering dedication and hard work in overcoming challenges and making continuous progress towards full operation. Mein wished the team success in ensuring the smooth and timely commissioning of the remaining units by the end of 2026.
He emphasized that this transformative project will accelerate progress, strengthen development, and contribute to the prosperity of future generations.
According to an official from the Arunachal Pradesh Power Department, the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, located on the Subansiri River, is expected to be fully operational by December 2026. Four of the eight units have already been commissioned.
This massive hydroelectric project is being developed by NHPC on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, featuring a total capacity of 2,000 MW with eight units of 250 MW each. NHPC announced the operation of Unit 4 on May 8, increasing the project’s operational capacity to 1,000 MW.
Officials noted that once fully operational, this hydroelectric project is expected to significantly enhance electricity availability in the northeastern region and contribute to India’s clean energy goals.
Additionally, officials highlighted that the project aims to integrate environmental tourism, adventure activities, cultural experiences, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Recently, Chief Minister Pema Khandu wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting support from the central government for the development of this massive project. He also sought technical cooperation from key central ministries, including tourism, power, water resources, ports, shipping, and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), advocating for a comprehensive government approach to realize this vision.
Officials anticipate that this project will create over 2,500 jobs in the long term, benefiting local youth, while aiming to attract more than 150,000 tourists annually in the medium term.
