Arsenal are poised to lead the race for England midfielder Georgia Stanway, who has confirmed she will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the current season when her contract expires.
Stanway, 27, is now in the last six months of her deal with Bayern Munich and, from January 1, is eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs. Arsenal have shown strong interest and appear well placed to secure her signature, although no official deal has yet been finalised.
Since moving from Manchester City to Bayern in 2022, Stanway has spent four seasons in Munich, making 94 appearances and winning three Bundesliga titles. This season, Bayern remain unbeaten and top the league by six points after 14 matches.
A transfer to Arsenal would bring Stanway back to the Women’s Super League, where she spent seven years with Manchester City before moving abroad. The Gunners, who value their England internationals, would welcome the double European Championship winner to join teammates Leah Williamson, Chloe Kelly, Beth Mead, Alessia Russo, Michelle Agyemang, Lotte Wubben-Moy and Taylor Hinds.
Expressing her emotions on social media, Stanway said, “I am incredibly grateful to FC Bayern for the past years. The decision to leave Munich and my team was incredibly difficult. I have made friends and memories here that will last a lifetime, and I’ve developed enormously as a player and person. I will give everything for the club until my very last day and want to say goodbye with as many titles as possible.”
Bayern Munich’s women’s football director Bianca Rech commented, “We had open discussions about her future, and her wish to try something new is understandable. We thank her for her time here and wish her the best. We still have a few months to make successful memories together.”
Stanway overcame a major injury last year after rupturing her right knee’s lateral collateral ligament. Despite a challenging rehabilitation, she returned stronger and fitter, starting every game for England during their successful 2025 European Championship defence.
Currently third in the WSL, Arsenal trail leaders Manchester City by eight points. With defender Smilla Holmberg recently signed from Hammarby IF, the club is expected to see significant squad changes this summer.
Several Arsenal players aged 30 and above, including captain Kim Little, Leah Williamson, Caitlin Foord, Katie McCabe, Beth Mead, and Manuela Zinsberger, are nearing contract expiry. Discussions are reportedly progressing well with Little and Williamson, while options have been extended for Mariona Caldentey and Kyra Cooney-Cross until 2027.
Recently, Arsenal extended head coach Renee Slegers’ contract until 2029 and appointed former England international Jodie Taylor as technical director.
From a tactical perspective, Stanway offers Arsenal vital physicality, resilience, and balance in midfield. Since Lia Walti’s departure to Juventus last summer, the Gunners’ midfield has lacked stability. Stanway’s box-to-box capabilities, including ball recovery, retention under pressure, and initiating attacks, would greatly enhance Arsenal’s midfield strength.
Her arrival is expected to bring renewed energy and depth, potentially making a significant impact on Arsenal’s campaign in the coming seasons.
