Islamabad, August 5: Amnesty International, a prominent human rights organization, has urged the Pakistani government to grant former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi Khan, unconditional access to their family and legal representatives.
Isabel Lassi, the acting regional director for South Asia at Amnesty International, stated, “For the past three years, Pakistani authorities have systematically deprived Imran Khan of his right to a fair trial. He has been held in prolonged solitary confinement, with restricted access to medical care and visitation rights. He has not been allowed to meet his family for the last eight months, and reports indicate that his eyesight has significantly deteriorated. Since December 2025, both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi Khan have also been denied regular meetings with their legal advisors.”
The human rights organization emphasized that both Imran Khan and his wife should receive adequate medical care, and their alleged unlawful solitary confinement should be terminated.
Lassi appealed to the authorities to ensure that Imran Khan’s family, party members, and supporters are granted the right to peaceful protests. She remarked, “Ahead of the anniversary of Imran Khan’s arrest, the authorities must guarantee the right to peaceful demonstrations organized by his family, party, and supporters. Furthermore, the arbitrary and unlawful actions against protesters and members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) should not be repeated.”
The organization noted that it had analyzed the cases filed against Imran Khan in 2024 and concluded that his imprisonment was unlawful and politically motivated. In January 2025, the former Prime Minister was acquitted in cases related to government secret documents and his marriage to Bushra Bibi Khan.
Amnesty International stated, “Imran Khan was first arrested on May 9, 2023, which triggered widespread protests across the country. He was re-arrested on August 5, 2023, and has been in custody since then. Following the protests on May 9, 2023, and November 26, 2024, many key leaders and supporters of his party were arbitrarily detained. Many of these individuals are still held on terrorism-related charges, with 85 people convicted by military courts.”
