New Delhi, April 18: The next hearing in the case related to the demand for women’s reservation, which stemmed from a protest at Jantar Mantar in July 2023, is set for April 27. This hearing is taking place at the Rouse Avenue Court, where the statement of the accused and Women Congress President Alka Lamba was recorded on Friday.
In July 2023, the women’s wing of the Indian National Congress, led by Alka Lamba, staged a protest at Jantar Mantar demanding the implementation of women’s reservation. During this protest, allegations arose of scuffles with police and a disruption of public order, leading to the registration of this case.
In a previous hearing, the court had framed criminal charges against Alka Lamba. The court stated that there is a prima facie case against her, providing sufficient grounds for a trial.
According to the prosecution, Alka Lamba faces serious charges, including pushing government officials, obstructing their duties, disobeying legal orders, and blocking public pathways. These charges fall under Sections 132, 221, 223(A), and 285 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The next hearing is now scheduled for April 27, and all eyes are on the court’s decision during this session.
This case is linked to a protest at Jantar Mantar ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where Alka Lamba and her supporters demanded the implementation of women’s reservation. During this protest, several allegations were made against her. Reports indicate that she is accused of pushing government officials, obstructing their work, disobeying legal orders, and blocking public pathways. The trial will proceed under the aforementioned sections of the IPC.
During the last hearing, the prosecution informed the court that Congress leader Alka Lamba incited the protesters, obstructed police duties, and caused a traffic jam. Conversely, the defense argued that the protest was peaceful and that there is no medical record of injuries to any police personnel. After hearing both sides, the court framed the charges.
