Bhopal, April 20: In Madhya Pradesh, a significant initiative called the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan is underway to promote water conservation. This campaign aims to revive water structures across the state. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated that water conservation is evolving into a people’s movement in the region.
CM Yadav emphasized the importance of saving water, highlighting it as a vital social responsibility. He noted that future generations should never feel the scarcity of this precious natural resource. To achieve this, it is essential to protect both current and previously dried-up water sources.
The Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan is a collaborative effort between the government and society, showing remarkable progress in just one month since its launch on March 19, 2026. This campaign is transforming into a comprehensive public movement focused on water conservation, enhancement of water structures, and community participation. As a result of this initiative, Madhya Pradesh has improved its national ranking from sixth to third place.
The state government has set a financial target of approximately ₹6,278 crores for the campaign, which will run until June 30. A total of 58 activities across 16 departments have been planned. Over 244,000 water conservation and enhancement projects have been identified, with an implementation cost of about ₹6,236 crores.
According to information provided by the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), significant achievements have been made in rural areas. Under this campaign, 39,977 farm ponds have been constructed, along with 59,577 recharge structures, and the revival of over 21,950 existing water structures.
Additionally, the construction and promotion of Amrit Sarovars are being encouraged. Urban areas are also witnessing extensive water conservation efforts. The Urban Development and Housing Department is actively working on enhancing ponds, wells, and old step-wells, cleaning and beautifying drains, and establishing rainwater harvesting systems. In response to the rising heat, various urban bodies have also set up drinking water stations in multiple locations.
