Melbourne: Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz made history by clinching the men’s singles title at the Australian Open. The 22-year-old defeated Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 to win his first Grand Slam of the season. With this victory, Alcaraz became the youngest professional tennis player to achieve a career Grand Slam.
World number one Djokovic started strong, winning the first set comfortably. However, Alcaraz fought back with determination, taking control from the baseline in his first Australian Open final. The Spanish player broke Djokovic’s serve twice in the second set and displayed impressive all-court rallies in the third set, showcasing some of the best tennis seen in Melbourne in recent years.
In the fourth set, Djokovic struggled but managed to hold his serve in the second game after saving six break points. Despite his efforts, the 38-year-old could not maintain his perfect title record at Rod Laver Arena and eventually lost the match.
Alcaraz secured the decisive break in the 12th game of the fourth set to seal the win after three hours and two minutes. This defeat delays Djokovic’s pursuit of a 25th Grand Slam title.
With seven Grand Slam singles titles, Alcaraz now equals tennis legends John McEnroe and Mats Wilander in the all-time list. He also became the eighth player to complete a career Grand Slam, joining an elite group that includes Fred Perry, Don Budge, Rod Laver, Roy Emerson, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. Among them, Budge and Laver achieved the Grand Slam in a calendar year.
