Akash Chopra Predicts Virat Kohli Will Outshine Dhoni and Rohit in IPL 2026

New Delhi, March 27: Former Indian cricketer Akash Chopra believes that Virat Kohli will deliver a superior performance in IPL 2026 compared to MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. Chopra emphasizes Kohli’s remarkable fitness and consistent batting ability.

In IPL 2025, Kohli played a pivotal role in leading Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to victory, scoring 657 runs at a strike rate of 144 across 15 matches, including eight half-centuries. Speaking to ‘GeoStar’, Chopra stated, “All eyes will be on Virat Kohli again, as he is incredibly fit. Yes, there are gaps between series, and he struggled to score runs in Australia due to that. However, once he starts scoring, he finds a way to maintain consistency.”

Chopra further noted, “The level of fitness he has achieved over time makes him unique. As an opening batsman in the IPL, he has more time to get into form. This also applies to Rohit Sharma, but I still believe it is slightly easier for Kohli.”

He also discussed the challenges Dhoni may face in IPL 2026, stating, “It’s going to be tough for Dhoni as he is over 40. Coming back to play after 10 months without any matches and performing in a role where he may only face 10-12 balls is incredibly challenging. Additionally, keeping for 20 overs adds to the difficulty.”

Chopra expressed expectations for Rohit to continue his aggressive style at the top of the order, setting a platform for the Mumbai Indians’ other batsmen. “When you are part of the Mumbai Indians’ batting lineup, it’s crucial for Rohit Sharma to set the stage. He has already made his intentions clear. However, when you have players like Quinton de Kock, Tilak, Surya, Hardik, Will Jacks, or Sherfane Rutherford at the other end, what other options do you have? You need to maximize the 20 overs, especially in the first six overs.” According to Chopra, this is why aggressive batting is expected from Rohit.
