Aizawl, April 20: Preparations are complete for the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections in Mizoram’s capital. Voting is set to take place on Tuesday, with over 239,000 voters, including approximately 126,000 women, expected to cast their ballots.
A public holiday has been declared in the AMC area to ensure smooth voting. According to an official notification, all government offices, educational institutions, and public enterprises will remain closed on election day, facilitating easier access for voters.
Officials from the State Election Commission (SEC) report that nearly 94% of the 2,768 senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and voters with serious illnesses have already utilized the home voting facility.
Candidates from four major political parties are contesting in this election. The ruling Zoram People’s Movement, the main opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), and the Congress each fielded 19 candidates, while the BJP has nominated 11 candidates.
In the previous municipal elections held in February 2021, the MNF secured 11 seats, gaining a majority. The Zoram People’s Movement won 6 seats, and the Congress obtained 2 seats.
The term of the municipal corporation ended on March 1, but the election process was delayed due to administrative reasons, including the state assembly’s budget session and board examinations.
The State Election Commission implemented the Model Code of Conduct on March 18, which will remain in effect until April 30. During this period, no new recruitment or appointment processes can begin in any government department, public enterprise, or corporation without prior approval.
Vote counting is scheduled for April 27.
