Bengaluru, April 21: Karnataka’s Home Minister G. Parameshwara announced on Tuesday that the concerns raised by Muslim leaders within the Congress Party will be reviewed, with Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, providing direction on the matter.
In a conversation with reporters, he emphasized that the Congress Party has consistently prioritized the representation of the Muslim community in elections. He clarified that the tradition of granting tickets to the families of deceased leaders has been misrepresented in this context.
Parameshwara stated, “Some individuals have requested tickets citing their voter base, which is not wrong. The decision to grant a ticket to the family of the late Shamanur Shivashankarappa should not be viewed from a narrow perspective. This is an internal matter for the Congress, and we will resolve it collectively with the party president, the chief minister, and all of us.”
It is noteworthy that a faction within the party expressed dissatisfaction over the demand to nominate a Muslim candidate for the Davanagere South by-election. Following allegations of anti-party activities after the elections, the Congress removed MLC Abdul Jabbar and Nasir Hussain from their positions.
Abdul Jabbar was asked to resign from the party’s minority cell, while Nasir Hussain refused to resign, leading to his removal from the position of political advisor to the chief minister.
On another issue, Parameshwara mentioned that he has requested a report from senior officials regarding allegations of harassment involving an inspector from the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement (DCRE) and a letter written by an SP to the Director General of Police (DGP).
He stated, “I have sought reports on both matters from the DGP. Action will be taken based on the findings.”
Reports indicate that DCRE SP S.S. Kashi wrote to DGP M.A. Saleem in April 2026, accusing Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudhir Kumar Reddy of mental harassment and bias. However, Commissioner Reddy has dismissed these allegations as baseless.
