Airtel Seeks Government Relief for AGR Dues Amid Vodafone Ideas Favorable Terms

Mumbai, March 30: Bharti Airtel, India’s second-largest telecom operator, is once again seeking relief from the government regarding its adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues. This request follows a statement from Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who indicated that the government had only assisted Vodafone Idea (Vi) based on a Supreme Court ruling. Despite this, Airtel is pushing for similar relief concerning its AGR obligations.

Following the Supreme Court’s order, Vodafone Idea received a ten-year repayment schedule, allowing it to defer payments on pending AGR and spectrum dues. This means that for the next decade, Vodafone Idea will contribute minimally towards these dues, with regular payments resuming in 2036. The ongoing AGR dispute has been a long-standing issue for telecom operators.

Airtel is seeking the same leniency that Vodafone Idea received. However, the government is hesitant to extend similar relief to Airtel, as Vodafone Idea’s assistance was contingent upon a Supreme Court directive. Airtel is likely to continue its pursuit of this relief, as any assistance would enhance the company’s free cash flow (FCF), enabling it to invest and expand its operations more effectively.

The telecom minister has made the government’s position clear, making this an intriguing situation to watch. Airtel may also consider approaching the Supreme Court to advocate for equitable treatment in the near future. Vodafone Idea’s need for support stemmed from its significant debt, which, if left unaddressed, could have severely impacted the company’s future and investment capabilities. This scenario could have led to a duopoly in the sector, which would not benefit the industry as a whole.
