Air Quality Crisis in New Delhi: GRAP-1 Implemented as AQI Hits 208

New Delhi, May 19: The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has activated the first phase of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the National Capital Region (NCR) after the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi reached 208 on Tuesday.

The sub-committee has mandated the implementation of all measures under GRAP-1, which includes strict adherence to Pollution Under Control (PUC) regulations, dust control at construction sites, and mechanical cleaning of roads.

According to a statement, the decision to enforce GRAP-1 was made after reviewing the region’s air quality and forecasts from the India Meteorological Department and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM).

In the meantime, CAQM’s flying squad teams conducted 125 inspections between April 29 and May 19, identifying 39 violations related to construction and demolition sites, industrial units, and diesel generator sets.

Of these inspections, 20 were at construction and demolition sites, 51 in industrial areas, and 54 related to diesel generator sets.

A statement released after the 131st Enforcement Task Force (ETF) meeting noted that out of the 39 violations, 10 were linked to construction and demolition sites, another 10 to industrial units, and 19 to diesel generator sets.

Based on the inspection reports, proposals have been made to shut down seven units/projects, seal 13 diesel generator sets, issue 12 show-cause notices, impose environmental compensation in four cases, and provide advice in three cases.

Six of these actions have already been completed, while the remaining actions are in progress.

The task force also reviewed actions taken after the 130th ETF meeting and found that relevant agencies have addressed all issues related to industrial sectors, construction and demolition inspections, and diesel generator sets.

The statement indicated that 17 units have been allowed to resume operations after ensuring compliance with regulations, including 13 industrial units and four construction and demolition sites.
