Bengaluru, June 23: Nandan Nilekani, Chairman of Infosys, stated on Tuesday that artificial intelligence (AI) will not replace IT software companies. Instead, it will assist companies that quickly adopt new technologies to expand.
In his address at the company’s 45th Annual General Meeting (AGM), Nilekani emphasized that there is a significant gap in AI usage among large enterprise clients, and bridging this gap is our goal. He asserted that AI will not replace companies like ours; rather, it will empower those that move purposefully and adapt swiftly to changing circumstances.
Nilekani expressed enthusiasm about leveraging the vast opportunities in AI-based services, projected to reach $400 billion by 2030.
He acknowledged concerns regarding the relevance of companies like Infosys when much of coding becomes automated. However, he clarified that software development extends beyond mere coding. It requires deep enterprise context, integration with existing technology investments, cybersecurity measures, testing, governance, and architectural expertise.
More than three years after the launch of generative artificial intelligence, Nilekani stated that Infosys is more relevant than ever and well-positioned for the coming decade. The company is adopting the best coding tools and improving productivity, indicating that there is still much to be done in the software development lifecycle.
He highlighted that the decisive opportunity lies in integrating intelligent AI systems with mission-critical enterprise platforms. The most significant benefits will arise from merging advanced models and agents with traditional transaction systems that underpin enterprise operations. This will be the source of the next wave of opportunities.
Nilekani also noted that clients trust Infosys to help them navigate the complexities of enterprise AI using its extensive experience. Infosys is fully prepared to assist its clients in moving forward, having already collaborated with 90% of its top 200 clients on their AI journeys.
