Director Anand L. Rai’s critically acclaimed 2013 film Raanjhanaa has found itself at the centre of controversy after its Tamil version Ambikapathy was re-released in theatres with an AI-generated twist in the climax. The reworked ending — where protagonist Kundan, originally shown dying, suddenly opens his eyes and sits up — has gone viral online, triggering a wave of reactions from fans and, most notably, from the film’s own director.

AI-Tweaked Ending Goes Viral
In the AI-edited version released in cinemas on 1 August, the emotional and tragic end of Kundan’s story is replaced by a dramatic resurrection. As he regains consciousness, his friends Bindiya (played by Swara Bhaskar) and Murari (played by Zeeshan Ayyub) break into tears of joy. Clips of this alternate ending are circulating widely on social media, drawing both surprise and criticism from viewers.

Director Anand L. Rai Strongly Criticises the Change
The viral footage eventually reached director Anand L. Rai, who publicly expressed his displeasure over the use of artificial intelligence to alter the film’s narrative. In a post, he stated:
“Today, an AI-created version of Raanjhanaa has been re-released, where Kundan survives. The climax has been changed without the consent of the director, writer, or those who poured their blood, music, poetry, and pain into the making of this film.”
In a prior post, he had also shared:
“The past three weeks have been strange and deeply disturbing. Raanjhanaa was born out of imagination, struggle, and creative risk. Watching it being altered and re-released without our knowledge or permission feels like a violation. What makes it worse is how easily it all happened.”
His statement has received support from fans, many of whom have voiced that they did not want or need an altered version of the film.
Original Climax: A Heartbreaking Farewell
In the original Raanjhanaa, Kundan (played by Dhanush) is shown fatally wounded after being shot. He is admitted to the ICU, with the act revealed as part of a betrayal by Jo (Sonam Kapoor). In the final moments, Bindiya scolds Jo and declares that the real Kundan wouldn’t have bled from the mouth, while Murari sheds silent tears. Kundan’s inner monologue plays as he reflects on his love for Jo, admitting that he is tired and won’t rise again. The film ends with his death, a powerful conclusion that highlighted the depth of his unrequited love.
