Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro: A New Era of Urban Connectivity Under PM Modis Leadership

Ahmedabad, June 10: Connectivity is a key indicator of any city’s progress. A modern and integrated transport system is directly linked to development, employment, tourism, and the quality of life for its residents.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the past 12 years have witnessed unprecedented changes in connectivity and transportation across the country. As the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, he envisioned a world-class metro network aimed at reducing traffic congestion, enhancing connectivity between cities, and accelerating urban development through an efficient public transport system.

This vision has culminated in the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro service, which stands as a remarkable example of fast, safe, and reliable public transportation. Following the successful implementation of Phase-1 and Phase-2 of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, the network now spans 68.28 kilometers with 54 stations, becoming an integral part of daily life for millions of citizens.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC), Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS), and the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) work in strong coordination to provide last-mile connectivity for passengers, with over 200 buses currently operating through metro stations.

Reflecting the Gujarat government’s mantra of ‘Ease of Living,’ the 68.28 km metro rail network not only enhances convenience for the residents of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar but also saves time. As a result, millions of passengers are now benefiting from the metro service. In 2023, an average of 69,000 passengers utilized the metro daily, which increased to 101,000 in 2024 and reached 133,000 in 2025. By May 2026, the daily ridership had surged to 153,000, indicating that the metro has become a preferred choice for fast, affordable, and reliable travel for the citizens of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

The Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro service has provided passengers with an exceptional experience of affordable and efficient urban transport. The extensive support for the metro service is evident from the total ridership figures. Since the expansion of the metro service in October 2022, a total of 138.1 million people have traveled by metro as of May 2026. Today, millions of students, employees, and tourists prioritize the metro for their daily commutes, showcasing the growing popularity of the metro and the transformation in the public transport sector in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

During major events like IPL matches and international cricket games held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, millions have chosen to travel by metro. On April 30, 2026, over 226,000 passengers used the metro during an IPL match, while 222,000 passengers traveled on May 21, 2026, and over 221,000 during a World Cup match on February 18, 2026. Additionally, during the Coldplay concert on January 25 and 26, 2025, more than 411,000 people benefited from the metro service.

The Prime Minister‘s vision aims to provide special facilities through the metro for youth, students, and economically disadvantaged groups living in densely populated areas who commute to other parts of the city for work. The metro alignment has been designed with this objective in mind. In response to the increasing needs of passengers, the expansion of the Ahmedabad Metro network is progressing rapidly. Plans are underway to create over 68 kilometers of new corridors under the Gift City extension, airport connectivity, and Ahmedabad Metro Phase-3, which are currently in various stages of approval from the central government.

Once completed, the expanded metro network will cover more areas of the city and accelerate economic and urban development in Gujarat. Furthermore, the Surat Metro project, with a network of approximately 40 kilometers and 38 stations, is also steering the city’s transport system in a new direction. Recently, a successful trial run was conducted on a 15-kilometer route.

The Ahmedabad Metro project is strengthening the modern public transport system in the state. Today, the metro has become a vital pillar of urban development and public convenience in Gujarat. By making travel easier, faster, and more accessible, the metro system is significantly contributing to advancing Gujarat towards the vision of a ‘Developed India.’
