Only 30% of High-Risk Pregnancies in Madhya Pradesh Receive Timely Hospitalization
In Madhya Pradesh, only 30% of identified high-risk pregnancies are admitted to hospitals on time, raising concerns among health officials.

Bhopal, October 28 (Daily Kiran) : In Madhya Pradesh, of the 6.2 million pregnant women registered on the health monitoring portal, approximately 200,000 have been identified as having high-risk pregnancies. Alarmingly, only 30% of these women are being admitted to healthcare facilities in a timely manner.
This issue was highlighted during a review meeting of the National Health Mission programs chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla. He urged officials to ensure the timely identification, monitoring, and treatment of high-risk pregnancies.
According to a government statement, the Anmol portal has registered around 6.2 million pregnant women, with 200,000 categorized as high-risk. Their monitoring is also conducted through the Suman Integrated Command Center.
During the meeting, Health Minister Shukla emphasized the need for timely registration of pregnant women and the completion of necessary prenatal check-ups. He also stressed the importance of screening under the Prime Minister’s Safe Motherhood Campaign and called for increased awareness about regular medical check-ups and institutional deliveries.
The minister insisted that the responsibilities of officials and grassroots health workers must be clearly defined, and regular monitoring of maternal and child health program implementation is essential.
According to sample registration system data from 2022-24, Madhya Pradesh recorded a maternal mortality rate of 135 deaths per 100,000 live births. As of September this fiscal year, the state achieved a first-trimester registration rate of 90.6% and an institutional delivery rate of 93.4%. The state has established 35 obstetric intensive care units, 109 primary referral units, and 229 delivery waiting homes to support pregnant women.
Shukla also directed officials to enhance access to specialist consultations in rural and remote areas through the telemedicine service e-Sanjeevani. He called for addressing gaps in service availability, ensuring the availability of essential equipment, and conducting regular reviews of facility usage.
Between April and September 2026, e-Sanjeevani facilitated 59,914 general tele-consultations and 10,890 specialist consultations in the state.
Additionally, the Deputy Chief Minister called for strengthening treatment facilities for newborns and critically ill children, as well as improving programs to combat malnutrition, anemia, diarrhea, and pneumonia.
