Ahmedabad, May 8: The Ahmedabad Crime Branch has arrested a 27-year-old man allegedly linked to a major drug trafficking network. Police reported that during a raid on Friday in the Dani Limda area, they seized mephedrone valued at over ₹14 lakhs.
The suspect has been identified as Noman Sheikh. He was apprehended based on intelligence received by the Crime Branch at a rented flat in the Al-Falah apartment near the Barrel Market in Dani Limda.
During the operation conducted on May 6, officials confiscated 468.640 grams of mephedrone, commonly known as MD drugs. Additionally, six mobile phones, an electronic scale, and cash were also seized.
The total value of the confiscated items is estimated at approximately ₹14.63 lakhs. According to police, Sheikh was already wanted in a case registered by the State Monitoring Cell, which involved the seizure of 289.770 grams of mephedrone under the NDPS Act.
A new case has now been registered against him at the DCB police station under sections 8(c), 22(c), and 29 of the NDPS Act.
Investigating officers stated that forensic experts conducted an initial examination of the seized substances, confirming them as mephedrone.
During questioning, the suspect revealed that he sourced the drugs from a supplier outside Gujarat and had been supplying them in Dani Limda and surrounding areas for the past two months.
Records from the investigation indicate that Sheikh has multiple cases registered against him for assault, robbery, and theft at the Sarkhej and Vejalpur police stations.
This arrest comes amid a series of anti-narcotics operations conducted in Ahmedabad and across Gujarat. Last month, the city’s Crime Branch arrested two individuals in the Ghi Kanta area, seizing 412 grams of mephedrone valued at ₹12.4 lakhs. Meanwhile, the Ahmedabad Rural SOG conducted a separate operation in the Bopal area, confiscating hybrid cannabis.
Earlier in April, Crime Branch officials seized 52.410 grams of mephedrone in the Behrampura area, valued at ₹1.57 lakhs, leading to the arrest of two individuals from Rajasthan.
In another recent operation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized methamphetamine worth ₹6.32 crores from a passenger at Surat railway station.
