Afghan Refugees in Pakistan Seek Three-Month Window for Safe Return

Kabul: Several Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan have appealed to the Pakistani government and Afghan authorities through dialogue to resolve ongoing issues and grant them sufficient time to return to Afghanistan in a dignified and phased manner, local media reported on Thursday.

The refugees expressed concerns over the rapid deportation actions and increasing pressure, which are causing serious difficulties for Afghan nationals. Haji Nazar, an Afghan refugee, urged the Pakistani government to provide a three-month timeframe to enable an orderly return to their homeland, according to a report by Afghanistan-based Tolo News.

Haji Nazar stated, “The Pakistani government should grant us three months so that refugees can return to their country in a systematic and staged way. Afghan citizens are currently facing multiple hardships.”

Refugee rights activist Allah Mir Miyakhail told Tolo News, “Security agencies are arresting and deporting Afghan refugees everywhere. Most refugees need time to settle their businesses and personal affairs. Many families are registered under proof of registration cards, but these cards have now become invalid.”

Activists emphasised that the return process should be voluntary, gradual, and involve international organisations’ support to prevent the emergence of a new humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. Another activist, Ali Raza Karimi, highlighted that many Afghan refugees are deprived of basic human rights and live in uncertainty due to the lack of valid identification documents.

Earlier this month, the Taliban stated that the problems of Afghan refugees in Pakistan are worsening. They called on the Pakistani government to respect refugees’ rights and to stop their arrests and harassment.

In an audio message quoted by Pajhwok Afghan News, Taliban deputy spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat said, “Unfortunately, Afghan refugees in Pakistan are being arrested, and their mistreatment and abuse are increasing, placing them in serious difficulties.”

Fitrat urged the United Nations and other relevant organisations to enforce refugee protection principles and intervene in countries where refugees’ rights are violated. He also stressed the need for financial assistance and support for the return of Afghan refugees to Afghanistan.

He called on the Pakistani government to respect refugee rights, adhere to international refugee principles, and cease the arrest and persecution of Afghan refugees.
