Herat, Afghanistan – Local police in western Afghanistan’s Herat province have seized 170 kilograms of illegal drugs from a vehicle and detained two suspected smugglers, officials confirmed.
Acting on intelligence, police stopped a car on Saturday and found hidden packages containing opium and hashish during a search. The two individuals in the vehicle were arrested on charges of drug trafficking.
According to a statement reported by news agency Xinhua, after initial questioning, the suspects will be handed over to judicial authorities. The provincial police emphasized that no one will be allowed to produce or smuggle illegal drugs anywhere in the province.
Local media outlet Tolo News reported a similar operation last week in eastern Khost province, where police seized 18 kilograms of hashish and arrested one suspected drug trafficker. In December last year, eight people were arrested in northern Jawzjan province on charges related to drug production and trafficking.
The provincial police have conducted targeted operations leading to multiple arrests and the confiscation of large quantities of illegal drugs, including hashish and heroin. The seized drugs were reportedly found at locations linked to those in custody.
These arrests are part of ongoing Afghan government efforts to combat illegal drug production, trafficking, and distribution nationwide. On November 14, 2025, a provincial police spokesperson announced the arrest of a suspect and seizure of illegal narcotics during an operation in northern Takhar province.
The official said the suspect was detained while attempting to transport chemicals used in the production of crystal methamphetamine and heroin to the provincial capital, Taloqan.
