Adani Green Energy to Develop 2,250 MW Pumped Storage Project in Andhra Pradesh

Amaravati, May 20: Adani Group’s renewable energy arm, Adani Green Energy, through its subsidiary Adani Hydro Energy Eleven Limited (AHEL), is set to develop a 2,250 MW pumped storage project (PSP) at Gandikota-2 in YSR Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh.

An official press release issued on Wednesday confirmed that the state government has approved the allocation of the AHEL project. This move is expected to strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s position as an emerging hub for clean energy and energy storage in India.

Under the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2024, this project aims to become one of the largest pumped storage projects in the country and serve as a key pillar of the state’s next-generation energy infrastructure strategy.

The project received approval from the State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB), chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

The development of the Gandikota-2 PSP will take place at the Lord Balaji Donthi Kona PSP Park in YSR Kadapa district. This initiative is anticipated to significantly enhance the renewable energy and storage capabilities of Andhra Pradesh. Additionally, it will support the state’s rapidly growing ecosystem in green hydrogen, advanced manufacturing, electric mobility, and AI-driven data centers.

The press release noted that globally, pumped storage projects are considered the backbone of renewable energy-based electricity systems. These projects store excess solar and wind energy during off-peak hours and release it during peak demand, providing stable clean energy around the clock.

India is witnessing rapid expansion in pumped storage capacity. According to government data, Andhra Pradesh has emerged as a leading center for pumped storage development, with several projects currently under construction.

Adani Group is also expanding its national pumped storage portfolio with projects in multiple states, including Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh, as part of its comprehensive renewable energy and energy transition strategy.

Andhra Pradesh has already established itself as a key destination for Adani Group’s clean energy investments, encompassing pumped storage and renewable energy projects.

This project will also be eligible for incentives under the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2024, which aims to attract investments of approximately ₹10 lakh crore and create jobs for around 750,000 people in the clean energy value chain.

The government reiterated that policy stability, expedited approvals, a robust transmission plan, and an integrated approach to industrial and clean energy development continue to attract some of the largest energy and infrastructure investments in India.

The Gandikota-2 PSP project is expected to be completed within 72 months.
