Actress Koena Mitra Defends Fireworks Amid BMCs Pollution-Free Diwali Campaign

Koena Mitra supports Diwali fireworks, rejecting calls for a pollution-free celebration amid BMCs campaign for environmental awareness.

Mumbai, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : Actress Koena Mitra has openly supported the use of fireworks during Diwali, emphasizing that it is an essential part of the festival’s joy. She believes that others should not dictate how Hindu festivals should be celebrated.

In a recent post on the social media platform X, Mitra expressed her views, stating, “Greetings to everyone, we celebrate Diwali with lights, fireworks, music, drums, and delicious food. Do not invite Pakistan’s sycophants to tell us how to celebrate Hindu festivals. Ignore their superficial social service. Wishing everyone a Happy Diwali in advance.”

Her comments are seen as a direct response to those advocating for a ban on fireworks during Diwali, citing environmental concerns and pollution.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a campaign to raise awareness about pollution during the Diwali festivities. This initiative included a video message from actress Dia Mirza, who urged Mumbai residents to refrain from using fireworks to reduce noise and air pollution, promoting an environmentally friendly celebration.

Mitra’s remarks have sparked a debate, drawing reactions from various political and entertainment figures. Shiv Sena leader Manisha Kayande commented on the deteriorating air quality in Mumbai, acknowledging the seasonal pollution issues that arise in October, November, and December. She stressed the importance of balancing festival celebrations with environmental considerations.

Abu Azmi, the state president of the Samajwadi Party, criticized the insistence on using fireworks, describing it as a form of bullying. He pointed out that while some leaders speak freely, the government remains passive. Azmi called for a collective effort to improve Mumbai’s air quality and suggested that fireworks should be banned entirely.

The ongoing discourse reflects a broader tension between traditional celebrations and environmental responsibility as Diwali approaches.
