Bhubaneswar, October 15 (Daily Kiran) : The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) is making headlines in the Odisha student union elections held on Thursday. As of 7 PM, the ABVP has claimed victories in 79 educational institutions. In contrast, the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) has won in 49 colleges.
Reports indicate that the opposition party, National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), along with independent candidates, each secured victories in seven institutions. Notably, the ABVP triumphed in five out of the seven universities in the state.
However, the Odisha Higher Education Department has yet to officially confirm the winners from the student union elections statewide. By 6:45 PM, a total of 153 colleges had announced their results, with 1,398 candidates emerging victorious. Among these, 756 candidates were elected unopposed, while 642 were selected through voting.
According to data shared by the Higher Education Department, voting took place from 8 AM to 2 PM across 332 higher educational institutions, including around 320 colleges and 12 universities. A total of 6,696 candidates contested the elections, comprising 6,358 from colleges and 338 from universities. Aside from a few minor incidents of violence, the campus elections were largely peaceful across the state.
Tensions flared at Rama Devi Women’s University in Bhubaneswar, where candidates and activists from BCJD and ABVP clashed during the elections. This incident followed the arrest of BCJD president Ipshita Sahu by the Commissionerate Police.
In a separate incident, the administration announced the indefinite closure of the Satapada Panchayat College in Puri district after several homemade bombs were thrown on campus. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or casualties. Other areas in the state experienced some tension, but no significant incidents of violence were reported.
These campus elections are the first to be held in Odisha’s colleges and universities in eight years, marking a significant moment in the academic year 2026-27.
