Mumbai, March 5: Senior leader of the Samajwadi Party, Abu Azmi, has written a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. In this correspondence, he demands the immediate implementation of the Advocate Protection Act to ensure the safety of lawyers in the state.
Azmi emphasized the increasing incidents of attacks, threats, and violence against lawyers in Maharashtra. He stated that lawyers play a crucial role in the justice system, working to deliver justice to the public under the law in courts. If lawyers feel unsafe, it will adversely affect the justice system as a whole.
He pointed out that the government has enacted special laws to protect doctors and healthcare workers. Similarly, it is essential to establish a robust law for the protection of lawyers, he argued.
In his letter, Azmi mentioned that the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa had submitted a draft for this law to the government some time ago, but no concrete steps have been taken yet. Citing examples from other states, he noted that the Advocate Protection Act has already been implemented in places like Rajasthan. Therefore, he urged that Maharashtra should also expedite the enactment of this law to ensure the safety of lawyers, allowing them to perform their duties without fear.
