Abhishek Banerjee Sends Legal Notice to Minister Agnimitra Paul in West Bengal

Kolkata, August 10: Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and MP from Diamond Harbour, sent a legal notice to Agnimitra Paul, the Minister of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs in West Bengal, on Monday. The notice accuses the minister of making baseless and inappropriate statements about Banerjee and his personal assistant, Sumit Roy, in the media.
According to the notice, Agnimitra Paul allegedly claimed that Banerjee’s attempts to protect Sumit Roy were related to Roy’s trip abroad for medical treatment and his involvement with the Supreme Court.
It is noteworthy that the Supreme Court granted Banerjee permission to travel abroad for eye treatment on the same day. Meanwhile, Sumit Roy, who has been evading authorities for a long time, appeared for questioning at the West Bengal Police’s Criminal Investigation Department office for the third consecutive day. An FIR has been filed against Roy in connection with an alleged illegal land occupation case.
In the legal notice sent by Banerjee’s lawyer, Ark Kumar Nag, the minister is also accused of falsely claiming that Banerjee stated that Sumit Roy had died.
The notice states, “My client clarifies that he has never made such a statement as you have publicly attributed to him. He has never said that Sumit Roy has passed away, nor has he made any statement suggesting a connection between Sumit Roy and his trip abroad for medical treatment.”
The notice demands that the minister retract her statement and publicly clarify the facts without ambiguity. It also requests that she make it clear that Banerjee never claimed that Sumit Roy had died.
Furthermore, the notice specifies that this clarification should be issued on the same public platform where the statement was made on August 9, 2026, to ensure that accurate information reaches the public and to correct any misinformation.
Additionally, the notice advises the minister to verify any information about Banerjee before making it public in the future. It emphasizes that the minister should have accurate and verified information to avoid facing public criticism or ridicule based on false information.
As of now, there has been no official response from Minister Agnimitra Paul regarding this matter.
