New Delhi, July 31: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has launched a sharp political attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding the sentencing of former councilor Tahir Hussain to life imprisonment in connection with the Delhi riots. Saurabh Bhardwaj, the Delhi state president of AAP, alleged that Hussain had deep ties with the BJP and that the party benefitted politically from the riots.
Bhardwaj stated that as soon as allegations surfaced against Hussain, AAP expelled him from the party. In contrast, he claimed, the BJP continues to defend individuals facing serious charges. Following the court’s sentencing of those guilty in the Delhi riot case, Bhardwaj noted that BJP and its supporters have been questioning AAP, despite the latter distancing itself from Hussain from the outset.
He accused the BJP of attempting to gain political mileage from this issue. Bhardwaj also leveled serious allegations against BJP leader and Delhi government minister Kapil Mishra. He claimed that the building where weapons and stones were allegedly stockpiled during the riots previously served as Mishra’s election and legislative office.
Bhardwaj further alleged that when the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) team arrived to demolish the building for illegal construction, Mishra was present to protect it. He challenged Mishra to publicly refute his claims, asserting that AAP would present evidence to support its assertions.
Additionally, Bhardwaj accused Mishra of promoting Hussain’s political career, helping him secure a party membership and a councilor ticket in the municipal elections. He noted that local leadership was initially against Hussain’s candidacy, yet he was still nominated.
Referring to the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, Bhardwaj claimed that Hussain was fielded as a candidate on an AIMIM ticket to benefit the BJP by splitting anti-BJP votes. He alleged that during the election campaign, Hussain received special privileges, and the police adopted a lenient approach towards him.
Bhardwaj concluded by stating that whenever communal tensions or riots have occurred in Delhi, the BJP has reaped political benefits. He reiterated that while the BJP defends leaders facing serious allegations, AAP acted swiftly to expel Hussain from its ranks.
