Srinagar, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : The 29th Sub-Junior National Sepak Takraw Championship has commenced at the Sher-e-Kashmir Indoor Sports Complex in Srinagar. This event has attracted more than 800 players and coaches from 30 states and union territories across India.
Numaan Sofi, representing Jammu and Kashmir, shared that the tournament’s opening ceremony took place on Sunday. Running from September 6 to September 10, the tournament aims to promote the sport in the region. “We brought this tournament to Jammu and Kashmir because this game is not widely played or enjoyed here. We want to celebrate it, as it is a recognized sport by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It is also included in the Asian Games and the Khelo India scheme. Our goal is for children in Srinagar to understand and enjoy this sport,” he explained.
Sofi emphasized the scale of the event, noting that more than 1,000 athletes, referees, coaches, and managers are participating. He conveyed a message to children watching from home, encouraging them to engage in sports to stay away from drugs and other harmful activities.
Shubanshu Kumar, a participant from Bihar, expressed his enthusiasm for the game, stating he has been playing for four years. He highlighted the opportunities the sport provides, including employment through sports quotas. A local player, Afan Shiraz, praised the game, explaining that each side of the court features three players. He urged children to show interest in Sepak Takraw. Last season, Uttar Pradesh excelled and claimed the championship title, and they aim to defend their title this year.
