New Delhi, April 25: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is currently visiting Azerbaijan, where he met with President Ilham Aliyev to discuss energy security. During his first trip to the South Caucasus, President Zelensky expressed his willingness to meet with Vladimir Putin in Azerbaijan.
Recently, negotiations mediated by the United States to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine have stalled amid rising tensions with Iran. Zelensky’s statement comes after a pause in diplomatic discussions led by the U.S. in recent weeks.
President Zelensky stated, “It is crucial for Ukraine that Russia finds the strength to end this unjust war. Baku can mediate in the diplomatic process to end Moscow’s large-scale aggression.”
He further mentioned, “We have informed the President of Azerbaijan that we are ready for trilateral talks. Kyiv has already engaged in such discussions in Turkey and Switzerland.”
The Ukrainian leader emphasized the significance of the talks in Azerbaijan, provided Russia is prepared for diplomacy. This marks his first visit to the South Caucasus since the war began.
However, the Kremlin has rejected negotiations with Ukraine outside of Russia. Continuous bombings and military assaults on Ukraine persist, with the Kremlin unwilling to retract its demands.
Meanwhile, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan reiterated that both Ukraine and Azerbaijan support each other’s territorial integrity. He reaffirmed Baku’s longstanding stance on the war in Ukraine.
Aliyev stated, “We exchanged views and confirmed that we have substantial cooperation, which has been reaffirmed today.”
