New Delhi, 7 December. Opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal scored his first One Day International (ODI) century in the third ODI against South Africa played in Visakhapatnam on Saturday. He was awarded the Player of the Match for his outstanding performance. Following the conclusion of the ODI series, Jaiswal is expected to represent Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
A senior official from the Mumbai Cricket Association confirmed that Jaiswal has made himself available for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. According to the official, Jaiswal personally expressed his readiness to participate in the tournament.
Mumbai, led by captain Shardul Thakur, is placed in Group A and currently tops the table with five wins out of six matches. The team’s final league match is scheduled against Odisha on 8 December. From there, the top two teams from each of the four elite groups will advance to the Super League stage. The next stage will be held in Pune on 12, 14, and 16 December, culminating with the championship final on 18 December.
Jaiswal, who last played in the 2023-24 quarter-finals, missed the previous season due to international commitments.
The left-handed batsman has scored 648 runs in 26 innings out of 28 matches in this tournament so far.
The five-match T20 series between India and South Africa begins on 9 December, for which Jaiswal has not been selected. This provides him with ample opportunity to play for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Having already scored centuries in T20 and Test formats, Yashasvi Jaiswal achieved his first ODI century in Visakhapatnam, scoring 116 runs off 121 balls. With this century, he joined the elite group of Indian cricketers who have centuries in all three formats of international cricket.
