New Delhi, April 9: World Archery Para Champion and current world number one, Sheetal Devi, is not focusing on the LA 2028 Paralympics just yet. Her attention is firmly set on the upcoming Para Asian Games in Japan later this year. She aims to take one step at a time before looking towards the larger goal of the Paralympics.
Last month, Sheetal was honored as the ‘Para-Archer of the Year’ at the World Archery Awards. This accolade followed her remarkable 2025 season, which included winning the world title in Gwangju.
During a press conference organized by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Sheetal stated, “I don’t think too far ahead, like directly about the Paralympics. I prefer to move forward step by step. Even in the World Series, my focus was solely on performing my best. The Paralympics will come later. Since the Asian Games are happening first, my main focus is on them.”
Sheetal recently won a silver medal at the World Archery Para Series event, marking the first outdoor international event of 2026. Her compatriot, Payal Nag, clinched the gold medal in the finals with a score of 139-136.
When asked about her preparations for the Para Asian Games in Japan, Sheetal replied, “So far, training has been going well.”
Coach Gaurav Sharma added, “Preparations are on track. Sheetal hasn’t played many matches this year, but her performance remains strong. Finishing in the top two is part of the game. It’s great that the gold medal went to India. Payal considers Sheetal her idol, so losing to her is a matter of pride, as she is also one of our fellow Indian athletes.”
He further noted, “It’s encouraging that we’ve realized the competition within India is very tough before the Asian Games. Players often think their competition is only with foreign athletes, but it’s a positive sign that we are witnessing such fierce competition domestically. This will enhance our focus for the Asian Games.”
