Mysuru, April 15: The Shri Guru Bhairavaikya Temple, located in the Mandya district of Karnataka, is currently in the spotlight as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate it. Born on January 18, 1945, in Karnataka as Gangadharaiah, he belonged to the Kannada Vokkaliga community, which is primarily agrarian. From a young age, he showed a strong inclination towards spirituality. Later, he joined the Adichunchanagiri Math and was initiated into the Nath tradition. He was part of a lineage of saints who carried forward the spiritual legacy of Bhaktanath Swamiji, Chandrashekharnath Swamiji, and Ramanandanath Swamiji. His dedication to spiritual practice and service earned him a unique identity.
Dr. Balagangadhar Swamiji prioritized education, health, and assistance for the underprivileged throughout his life. He established numerous schools, colleges, and hospitals, significantly improving the lives of millions. This is why he is remembered not just as a religious leader but also as a social reformer.
Under his leadership, the Math made remarkable contributions in the fields of education and service. His primary goal was to provide basic amenities to people living in villages and backward areas. He worked beyond the boundaries of caste, religion, and region, striving to unite people. In recognition of his efforts, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third-highest civilian honor, in 2010.
Dr. Balagangadhar Swamiji passed away at the age of 64 due to kidney failure on January 13, 2013, while receiving treatment at BGS Global Hospital in Kengeri. His death left millions of followers in deep sorrow, but his teachings and work continue to live on.
