Amritsar, April 14: On Tuesday, devotees flocked to gurdwaras across Punjab and Haryana to celebrate Baisakhi. This festival is one of the most significant events, marking the establishment of the Khalsa Panth (Sikh community) by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh.
Baisakhi also symbolizes the onset of the harvest season. The Golden Temple, one of the holiest sites in Sikhism located in Amritsar, was beautifully decorated, drawing a large number of devotees who arrived for prayers before sunrise.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which manages gurdwaras in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh, deployed task force personnel to manage the crowd effectively.
A significant number of devotees also gathered at Takht Keshgarh Sahib in Anandpur Sahib, the birthplace of the Khalsa Panth established in 1699. Many consider taking a holy dip in the temple’s sarovar (sacred pool) on this day to be of great importance. A community kitchen (langar) was organized to serve meals throughout the day.
In addition to the Golden Temple, people took holy dips in the sarovars of various historic gurdwaras across Punjab.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann extended his greetings on the occasion of Baisakhi and Khalsa Panth’s ‘Sajana Diwas.’ In his message, he stated, “The Khalsa Panth, established by the tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, always inspires us to protect religion and truth and serve humanity.”
This day also symbolizes the ripening of the Rabi crop, marking the time for farmers to harvest wheat. Furthermore, it holds historical significance as it marks a pivotal moment in India’s freedom struggle, with many known and unknown martyrs sacrificing their lives at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar in 1919.
This week, a group of devotees departed from Amritsar to Gurudwara Shri Panja Sahib in Pakistan to participate in the religious gathering held for Khalsa Sajana Diwas (Baisakhi).
In his congratulatory message, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed, “May this sacred festival, filled with faith and joy, bring new energy, enthusiasm, and excitement into everyone’s lives, along with prosperity and welfare for our farmers.”
